Today we’re turning our attention to unwanted hair up there.
Facial hair is a part of life, guys, but in a woman’s world, it’s kind of a taboo subject.
Put it this way – it’s one thing to cancel a catch-up for a waxing appointment, but a whole other thing disclosing the fact that you’re skipping Friday drinks to get your mo tended to.
If you were blessed with dark hair, you’d know the struggle is real, but even a cluster of slightly dark hairs can create a 5 o’clock shadow when left unattended (not a good look, FYI, unless you’re George Clooney).
But tending to your upper lip hairs is kind of like a pap smear. Most women have them, but it’s not exactly something you’re going to bring-up over Sunday brunch.
Shaving isn’t an option (read: is NOT an option), plucking is painful and waxing can leave you red raw.
So what’s a girl to do?
We decided to do our research, and at home bleaching came-out on top as the upper lip shadow cure du jour.
So for those of you battling Movember all year round, welcome to home facial bleaching 101. It’s going to change your life.
1. Get yourself a facial bleaching kit that’s safe for use on sensitive skin (the last thing you want is a burnt upper lip, trust us). Follow the instructions to mix the bleach and accelerator together. Pay special attention to the correct measurements for each – too much accelerator will burn your skin, and too little will make the whole thing less effective.
Do a preliminary test patch somewhere less obvious (like your forearm) by applying the mixture, waiting 10 minutes and then rinsing with warm water.
2. Make sure the area you’re bleaching is clean and free from facial creams or make-up. Using the spatula, apply a thick layer of bleach over the unwanted hair (making sure the hairs are fully covered).
3. Leave for 10 minutes. If you start to feel any burning or itching during this time, wash with cold water immediately.
4. After 10 minutes, scrape it off using the spatula and inspect the hair. If it’s not quite there yet, you can reapply and leave for another 5 or so minutes.
5. Rinse the area with cold water and pat dry with a towel.
6. Follow with a gentle moisturiser or vitamin E oil to nourish the skin.
7. Repeat once a month or as often as needed.
