New York and LA-based piercer J. Colby Smith is first and foremost a healer. He’s not a healer in the traditional sense of the word; he doesn’t use crystals to draw negative energy out of his clients, nor does he run 10-day meditation camps on an island off the coast of Thailand. Instead he uses piercings and subtle, delicate jewellery to make people feel really good about themselves. If he wasn’t a piercer, Colby would have liked to have tried his hand at acupuncture or reflexology, and while it might be self-serving, we’re pretty happy that he chose to go down the piercing route. Because his work is some of the best out there.

Having moved from Utah to New York twelve years ago, Colby did what a lot of bright-eyed creative young people do when they move to the big apple, and fell into the job of his dreams — piercing  — through a combination of happenstance and heady determination. And two-minutes into our Skype call, it became pretty clear why he’s continued to flourish in the industry for so long.

Now with two studios, one in NY and the other in LA and a VIP client list to die for (here’s looking at you Sky Ferrera, Zoe Kravitz, Scarlett Johansson and every Fashion Editor, stylist and actress worth knowing). Basically any piercing you’ve spotted and lusted after of late, chances are, Colby is the man responsible. His piercings are delicate, refined, of the highest quality and personalised; paying respect for his craft and the energy of the person he is working with.

In short, you somehow always leave a Colby session a cooler version of yourself.

The fact that Colby has been a vegan for the last 15-years is a true testament to his empathetic nature, and when prompted about what aspects of his job he loves most, the laid-back legend was all about the people he gets to meet while piercing. He feels “very lucky to be in a career where my job is to interact with people every day and all different types of people, every race, religion, sex”, and that level of understanding and connectedness, coupled with his experience and true love for his art, is what makes him one of the most in-demand piercers around.

We’re lucky enough to be welcoming him to our shores next week, and to celebrate, we had a poke around his beautiful home in LA and chatted to him about everything from his skincare routine (beauty snobs beware, the phrase ‘bar of soap’ was thrown out at one point) to how he fell into, and in love with, piercing in the first place. Thanks, Colby!
