When Colour Feels Sophisticated

Monochrome doesn’t always mean black and white, it actually refers to varying tones of a singular colour, perfect for matching your lips to your blush. Try using cream products with sheer finishes to keep it more modern and less grandma; a tint or gloss on the lips really comes into it’s own for this look. I love creating this makeup with pink or red tones but you can also try a peach or tan colour if you want it to feel less romantic.

If you dream of wearing colour on your eyes but aren’t confident in your skill set (we can’t all master a liquid liner) try using a soft eyeshadow brush to buff a single colour all over your eyelid, going right up to the lash line and keeping the edges softly diffused. Matte shades will feel more daytime fun whereas adding a little shimmer keeps it playful and catches beautifully in the light.

Does navy blue mascara makes you think instantaneously of Princess Diana? I hear you but bear with me; changing your traditional black or brown mascara for a deeply hued shade such as navy, forest green or burgundy can emphasise your eye colour whilst adding interest around the eyes without having to do too much. Leave the bright neon colours for the club kids, this is about being chic and understated whilst having everyone wonder how your eyes seem suddenly so much brighter.

For a very clean, very easy and very effective way of adding colour into your makeup just pick your favourite shade of waterproof eyeliner and run in through your waterline both top and bottom. That’s it, no extra tricks or special techniques. I always choose an eyeliner that specifically says waterproof to avoid any smudging and keep it place whilst also making sure the colour stays bright all day.

A red lip is a classic for a reason, no matter your preference you will always be able to find a shade that suits; I subscribe to the idea that most shades of red suit everyone and the variance will be more to do with your mood and season than anything else. Rusty burgundy for the autumn, a true blue red for the winter season, zesty orange shades for the spring and vibrant coral gives pure summer energy. It doesn’t just stop at a shade range either, try a full coverage matte blurred at the edges for a soft focus finish or a high impact satin sheen for a juicy effect.

Highlighter doesn’t have to always be golden or neutral, try using a shade in iridescent purple, blue or green to add fun and lightness to the inner corner of the eye or onto the brow bone in lieu of traditional eyeshadow. Choose your product well and the result is a discreet flash of shimmering colour that appears just as the light hits.
