Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt like a slightly dull, dehydrated version of yourself? Is your skin lacking the glow? I recently had a month-long hiatus without using a vitamin C serum – and honestly, I didn’t expect how much I would miss it, and notice it. It properly cemented to me the importance of using vitamin C, and why I won’t skip this step in my skincare routine. I could even go as far as to say, that this might be my favorite skincare product in my routine.
Vitamin C is undoubtedly a super important antioxidant, helping protect your skin against pollution and other free radicals. Not only is it crucial to get enough Vitamin C internally, but the results are also hugely beneficial when you use it topically. Vitamin C hosts an array of benefits, including helping reduce fine lines, protecting skin from sun damage, reducing hyperpigmentation, evening out skin tone, increasing collagen production, supporting wound healing and to top it off – brightens the skin. A multifaceted wonder product!
Greatness aside, it’s not for everyone. Renowned London facialist Jacqui Parker explains that Vitamin C can be too harsh for some. Jacqui shares “Anyone who has sensitive skin, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and sometimes even acne, needs to be careful about using vitamin C. There are only specific brands on the market that are safe for everyone” which she includes my fave Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic amongst her top recommends. Jacqui explains that strong Vitamin C’s can sometimes exacerbate sensitivity and cause breakouts in specific skin types. She suggests Vitamin B as a gentler alternative for those with sensitive skin or who suffer from skin complexities. “Vitamin B, like niacinamide, helps with oiliness. It’s not irritating in the same way that C can be. And it won’t cause breakouts, especially for oilier skin’.
However, if your skin isn’t on the sensitive side and you can handle it, Jacqui along with the rest of the world of dermatology (and me) agree the benefits of using a daily vitamin C are incredible, and can truly deliver huge results to maintain and improve the texture and quality of your skin. It is recommended to be the first product after cleansing as part of your daily routine offering results after a few weeks of use, taking its rightful place as the foundation of your skincare regime.
Here are our favourite Vitamin C serums on the market that we feel are truly worth the investment, and will leave you glowing 100% for the better.
