The Best Red Lipstick For Every Hair Colour
In the (extremely lucrative) and fabulous world of red lipstick, there are more shades than you can poke a stick at. Finding your perfect one is hard, and for some reason the shade that looked amazing on your friend doesn’t quite look the same as you (excluding MAC’s Morange which is pretty much universally the best).
We’ve all been there, and we’ve all been at the bottom of our make-up bag, scrambling last-minute to find the right red to make-up for an outfit that’s lacking 10%.
Apart from matching skin tones and lipstick shades (cool on cool, warm on warm), there isn’t much else in the way of guidance, so we went to town with a bunch of red lipsticks to find the most flattering shade for blondes, brunettes and beyond.
Perfect for platinum – MAC Retro Matte in Ruby Woo
Platinum blondes should steer-clear of bright colours and pinky undertones. Deeper shades work best and balance-out the hair (unless you’re going for a Nicki Minaj vibe, in which case, what would we know?) MAC’s Ruby Woo is as matte as they come and stays put all day.
Best on brunettes – Shu Uemura Supreme Matte lipstick in M OR570
Brunettes and red lipstick go together like JLaw and Dior. They can pretty much get away with any shade – bright, light, deep or dark, but vibrant shades pack the most punch. Shu Uemura’s M OR570 is the ultimate red with just a hint of orange.
Best on black – MAC Matte in Chili
Like brunettes, those with black hair have a little room to move. MAC’s Matte in Chili is a bold red with a brownish tint – perfect for after 5. Also experiment with brighter shades and deep reds. The world is your oyster.
Best on dark blonde to brown – Tom Ford Lip Colour Rouge a Levres in Cherry Lush
Reds with pink undertones are striking without being overpowering. Go for deep cherry shades or true red.
