What does Beauty mean to you?

Beauty is about being genuine and natural. As a kid, I always remembered my aunt telling me ‘The best makeup is the one you don’t see.’

My mom never wore any makeup and didn’t teach me anything about beauty routines, so I improvised and always played it very low-key – but always clean and done hair, teeth, and nails.

On Skincare

In the morning, I use Barbara Sturm face cleanser. For my face, I love a hydrating cream, I like Tata Harper at the moment. In the evening I use Jelly makeup remover and some Guerlain Royal jelly serum and hydrating cream. I also have for my face a beautiful facial massage tool in metal (Nagae) that I bought from Japan, I am not disciplined enough to use it but I love the design of it in my bathroom.

On Makeup

I like to keep my make-up super light – La Roche Posay concealer, and a mascara (I change between the Nars one, and ones from trips to Korea or Japan).

I only wear lipstick when I go out, so usually it is in my bag. I love the Hermes ones, usually peony pink. My nails are usually mid-length, normal polish (never gel or semi) and I like to try colors (dark in winter from grey to brown) and bright in summer ( yellow to lilac) but never pink or coral. I like a nude color when super long.

On Haircare

My hair is very long, curly, and dry, so I don’t wash it every day, and only use a sulfate-free conditioner or mask (never shampoo). I have to hydrate it with a mask weekly – I use K18 and a daily oil by dear Dracena. I had to be more careful with my hair after I gave birth, as it got damaged during that magic spell of the pregnancy period. I take hair vitamins by Phyto, and do a Keratin salon treatment a few times a year.

I brush my hair with a Mason Pearson brush and do my braids with water and oil to have structured curls in the morning.

My husband laughs at me and says I go to bed as Wednesday Addams and get up as Morticia!

On Health and Wellness

I wish I had more time to exercise, but I work a lot. Sleep though is to me a key element for beauty. And I need a lot of it! Also when I fly I always always have face masks to keep my skin moisturized during the flight.

On Fragrance

I don’t wear too much perfume, but my current one is Bal D’Afrique of Byredo. I was wearing Alaia before (and kept the bottles designed by Martin Szekely). I discovered three great brands on my last trip to Korea: Non-Fictionnal, Sinang, and Eath Library. Also, I worked on a design item with the French brand d’Orsay and love their historical 1915 -vous etes ailleurs CG.

Sophie's Directory

I always visit beauty shops/ organic supermarkets when I travel. I love Korean stores (Olive Young), and Japanese street stores. I like to buy Papaw cream from Australia, scar balms from Portugal, or lately rare oils from the Algerian desert. In Switzerland, I love going to the Vals thermal baths, as much for the thermal bath as Zumthor’s architecture.
