In Rabin's File

‘I love the purity of this natural product. You can use it for everything. Protection, boosting, hydration, aftersun etc. A product that is always in my suitcase or travel kit’.

‘I just discovered this new skincare brand for men that turns out to have some amazing skincare products. A dual function cleanser and shaving mousse at the same time. This daily cleanser transforms into an ultra-soft, hydrating shaving mousse. Really amazing.’
‘Also from the same brand. This concentrated restorative face serum boosts your skin’s hydration. Again, it is as soft as silk and my skin absorbs it easily. It is perfect if you have oily skin like me. I love it!!!’

‘I love this new product. I was a bit skeptical at first but this is THE perfect face sunscreen for my skin. The light formula allows my skin to absorb it and it doesn’t leave a shine. Plus it’s beautifully designed and the perfect size to carry in my bag. The best sunscreen for men, I can’t live without this product.’

What does Beauty mean to you?

For me, beauty is something that comes from within. Beauty is energy that comes out when you feel good about yourself. It glows when you are excited or happy. That’s why I think I should take care of my body, I should cherish it. I now see my body as a house because of my research here in Japan. It’s not about the house… it’s about who lives there.

On Skincare

I have seriously morning and evening routines. Haha. Really! When I wake up, I touch my face first. It’s something I always did as a child. It feels good to say, ‘Hi, I’m here’. After this ritual I start with a warm shower and end with cold water. While I do this, I wash my face with Garnier Skin Naturals Pure Active Matcha Deep Clean. My skin is slowly changing over the years. This product is perfect for me now. I have sensitive but oily skin. I feel it needs a gentle treatment and this Garnier skin product gives that. As for shower washes, I found this great Japanese product from Hatomugi. This rich body wash contains bobbin seed extract to hydrate the skin. It is awesome. After shaving I use Weleda skin care products; Balancing Face Cream Light the day and Firming Night Cream for the night. They are based on natural ingredients and not perfumed. The natural composition of the ingredients smells so good to start the day. Then I apply Biodermal 50 SPF + Hydra Plus sunscreen for sun protection.

On Haircare

I’m quite specific when it comes to hair care. During an art residency in Thailand I discovered that Aloe vera gel is not only good as a natural after-sun product, but that it is actually also good for your hair. It may sound a bit strange, but I’ve been using it all day. Not only does it moisturize your hair, it is also easy to comb. But most of all I love the wet look feel and shine on my hair. Try it, and you’ll love it too.

On Make-up

Why no men’s make-up!? I like a natural look and no makeup. But I’m for it.

On Health and Wellness

I believe that the body gets all the natural ingredients it needs from the healthy things you eat. But eating organic every day is impossible for me. Now in Japan I try to eat as much fish as possible for Omega-3. And I feel more vital. But to add supplements to my daily routine such as; vitamin D, K2 and D3. In the evening, an hour before going to bed, I take a magnesium tablet for relaxation and muscles. I practice yoga in the morning to keep myself grounded. It gives me balance, focus and strength to start the day with my routines and art practice.

On Rituals

I believe my art practice is part of my health and wellness routine. The creative process gives me satisfaction, pleasure and joy. My art making is time-based and about being in the moment. It’s about being in the NOW, asking myself questions: what do I hear, what do I see, what do I feel? My art speaks about the context and condition I am in at that specific moment. The works of art are remnants of memories. So I see my art making as part of my health and well-being. It gives me energy, happiness and peace. I believe these are important topics in life. Following the heart is the most important thing and is so underestimated.

On Fragrance

I love Serge Lutens fragrances. My favorite is the beautiful shaped bell bottle La Myrrhe. It is a very concentrated scent and almost body-like, love this link that reminds you of the body. Arabie and Ambre Sultan are my second favorites. They are warm and powdery scents that match my skin tone perfectly for winter. For the summer I prefer it more light like Fleurs d’Oranger. A fresh, powdery and energetic scent of orange blossoms. There was the perfect scent for day and night from Avenda called ‘ Lavender’. But they stopped producing it, which I think is a shame. It was a beautiful scent with many layers. If you are in Paris, you must visit his magical shop in Jardins du Palais-Royal. Serge Lutens is a true artist that created humble but soooo layered fragrance art!

Rabin's Directory...

My favourite place to treat myself is Skinby in Rotterdam. It’s a super professional salon that offers great service and men’s treatments that give my sensitive skin a great boost. With personal sessions and customized advice, they search for the essence of your beauty, health and care. I love this place in the creative and energetic area of the Pannenkoekstraat in Rotterdam.

My other favourite spot is YG Studios. This is my place where I practice my yoga skills. A very pleasant studio where you can have your fun and dynamic classes. They believe that moving your body should be part of our daily routine and I agree on that.
