What does Beauty mean to you?

Of course, the idea of beauty is much larger than what we pursue in our bathrooms at home.  But that type of beauty falls into two camps – maintenance and decoration, skincare and makeup.

I have found that the more care I put into skincare, the less time I need for makeup. If my skin looks fresh, I am happy to look mainly undone otherwise.

On Skincare

My skincare routine has stepped up a notch from that of my early 30’s, and especially from my 20s- where I would wash my face with shampoo and not wear sunscreen. Now I end the day by cleansing with an oil or balm cleanser. This has stopped me from having blocked pores on my chin, which cursed me for years.. I am using Augustinus Bader cleansing balm, and it’s perfect. I then do a spritz of Monastery Rose essence, followed by a retinol serum, and then by a thick moisturizer (Augustinus Bader at the moment, but also love Sisleya). Then I follow with an oil to seal it all in for the night. I am loving the Noble Panacea Nourishing Lift oil. I use my LED light mask every night for ten minutes after the skincare marathon is done.

The mornings are much simpler, thank god. Just a splash of cold water, Vitamin C serum (Raei ‘Morning Dew Vit C’), a moisturizer (Augustinus Bader again, or Aesop) and a sunscreen. I am loving Raei’s Sun Milk Drops, which has a nice sheen to it, and makeup sits nicely on top of it.

On Makeup

During the day I am super lazy with makeup, so makeup needs to be things I can apply quickly with my fingers. I stopped wearing mascara in the daytime years ago

I love most things that Ilia makes- especially their cheeksticks. You can quickly make yourself look healthier. I also like to smudge a bit of it above my eyes. If I have time I use their translucent powder to take down my forehead shine and also around my nose.

Then to make me feel tidy and a little bit ‘done’, I like to brush my brows into place with Glossier Boy brow. They are unruly animals and need to know who’s boss.

In the evenings, if I have a party to go to that is when I spend more time on my face. I will wear eye makeup or a lip. For both of these I would rather go with something graphic and strong, and not trying to be blended or subtle. A strong red lip or a flick or black liner. I hate a smokey eye or ‘nude’ lipstick on me. I quite easily look cheap, so need to be careful.

On Haircare

My hair has been quite a process to figure out. People think it’s incredibly thick, but it’s very fine. There is just TONS of it. So it reacts to weather/humidity in an extreme way. But also it is very obedient and straightens easily. As with makeup, I am too lazy to do much to my hair. I never use a hairdryer or straightener, and go out with it wet through the winter in NY.

I do however like to do a Keratin treatment to it every 6 months so it stays easy to manage. And so I use all sulfate free products. And I don’t really believe in spending a lot of hair products- I use Loreal Ever Pure for shampoo and conditioner. I do love Oribe for serum – it smells so good.

On Wellness

I have always eaten well, and this is of course the foundation to all wellness and health. My mum is an amazing cook, and also is very well read on nutrition and all things health so we grew up loving healthy food, and cooking ourselves from a young age.

I practice Yoga throughout the week and weekends. This is my mediation time, along with a walk around my neighborhood and park every morning. And then in my studio, I listen to music all day, and have various incense on the go to keep me in a decent frame of mind.

Despite all of this I have a soft spot for martinis and wine come the end of the day. But life is all about the balance.

On Fragrance

I really love Aesop’s Marrakech. I had been wearing it for a while, before realizing my mum wears it too. Maybe that is why I was drawn to it. But it smells like you have just come out of the most delicious spa in an exotic location.

Your Beauty Secrets..

A Sunday night scorching hot bath + exfoliating mask. And straight after- at-home microneedling torture + many layers of serums and oils + red light mask to seal the deal. I swear it’s as good as any facial.

I love the cheap massages and nails in NYC- there’s a real culture of these over here that Europe/London doesn’t have.

I love Bergen Spa in Cobble Hill for amazing massages, in perfect clean, cosy rooms for $50 for an hour. It’s my regular weekend treat!
