What does Beauty mean to you?

To me, beauty in people is an inner confidence, in the energy they radiate, in the way they hold themselves. I find it in calmness and stillness, so nature is really where I find the most of it, in a sunrise, a sunset, the trees outside my bedroom window, a murmuration of birds.
In terms of my personal philosophy, taking time for myself and my own self-care gives me an inner serenity and empowerment and at least a feeling of some sort of control. A consistent routine is essential to my sense of balance.

On Skincare

In the mornings, before my workout, I simply splash my face with water. Following my workout after I shower, I cleanse with Paula’s Choice, followed by Dr Sebagh Rose De Vie Serum, which adds a beautiful glow. For SPF protection, I rely on the Ultra Violette SPF 5O, a product I trust because it’s formulated in Australia, where UV exposure is high. I finish with Weleda Skin Food (Rich Intensive) for a nourishing boost.

In the evenings, I start by removing my makeup with the Naturium Cleansing Balm and double cleanse re using my Paula’s Choice hydrating cleanser. From the same range, I exfoliate with Paula’s Choice Liquid Exfoliant with Salicylic Acid. Twice a
week (Monday and Friday), I incorporate Teresa Tarmey’s Retinol Cream into my routine. Lastly, I moisturize with Skin Rocks Face Cream, which leaves my skin feeling hydrated and refreshed. These trusted favourites are the core of my skincare routine.

“I use this a couple of times a week. It’s incredible for ageing skin. I swear by her facials and make it a point to have one with her every quarter.”

“The perfect balance of freshness and depth and has some of my favourite notes like bergamot, fig, and bay leaves with a rich base of cedarwood and musk. The black tea leaves add a unique, dry, tobacco-like quality. It’s an addictive fragrance that feels both timeless and modern.”

On Makeup

I have my trusted essentials that are the perfect balance for a simple yet effective routine. MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation gives me an even, flawless base without feeling heavy, while the Chantecaille Liquid Lumiere adds just the right amount of
glow, giving my skin a natural radiance. The Charlotte Tilbury Push Up Lashes mascara defines and lifts my lashes effortlessly, making them look defined without clumping. I love the Olaplex Brow Bond serum to help build my brows, and the BBB London Dream Brows Powder is perfect for enhancing my brow’s natural shape for a soft, sculpted look. MAC Studio Fix Pressed Powder is my go-to for setting my makeup—it’s lightweight and keeps everything in place without looking cakey. In the summer I’ll switch to my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer with SPF as it’s a breathable, lightweight finish and protects my skin from the sun. Each of these products is perfect for a fresh, polished look with minimal effort. During the COVID period, I made a shift in my makeup routine, opting for less makeup, and it’s now become my new normal. For my everyday lifestyle where I’m often on the go, this works well for me.

On Health and Wellness

My health and wellness philosophy revolves around the importance of routine. I make it a priority to get outside every morning with my dogs, even during the winter. I kickstart my day with a flat white from my local coffee shop en route to Hampstead Heath. I run twice a week and train twice a week with my personal trainer Josh, who I’ve been training with for over 3 years now. We often focus on weight training, especially now I’m in my 50s, keeping my muscles and bones strong is important.
I’m trying to incorporate yoga as well now when I can and I recently enjoyed an amazing Sound Bath at my new gym The Lighthouse, it was like a brain massage, incredibly relaxing. I have a deep tissue massage twice a month.
Getting outside in the sunlight, connecting with people, and having my caffeine fix are all my essential for me before I dive into work which takes a lot of energy and focus. Staying hydrated is important too, so I drink plenty of water. In the winter, I
take vitamin D and glucosamine for joint health, though I’m not big on supplements and prefer to maintain a varied, healthy diet. I usually make a smoothie in the morning for me and my partner Henry which is packed with good stuff – ginger,
turmeric, flaxseed, apple cider vinegar, cherries, blueberries, spinach, avocado etc. Anything I have that I can throw in to get us off to a good start!

On Fragrance

Over the years, I’ve tried various fragrances, but Le Labo’s THÉ NOIR 29 has truly become my signature scent, its the perfect balance of freshness and depth and has some of my favourite notes like bergamot, fig, and bay leaves with a rich base of cedarwood and musk. The black tea leaves add a unique, dry, tobacco-like quality. It’s an addictive fragrance that feels both timeless and modern.

I also have a deep affection for Jo Malone’s Blackberry and Bay. I first discovered it while traveling to Paxos, Greece in 2018. That year, I had forgotten my Le Labo, so I stopped by Jo Malone at Heathrow Airport, trying a few scents until I found this one and immediately fell in love. Now, every time I wear it, the fragrance brings back memories of that summer, and I make it a tradition to switch to it in the warmer seasons as the perfect summer fragrance.

A Beauty Tip you swear by?

It’s a cliché but – beauty sleep! It’s not always easy but If I don’t sleep well my skin looks dull and makes the next day so much harder. I also swear by staying hydrated with water to keep my skin
looking bright.

Jo's Directory

Facials: Teresa Tarmey – Located on Kensington Park Road, her facials are a game-changer, and I swear by her skincare expertise. I get her ‘Target Facials’ which combine advanced techniques like Fractional Radio Frequency, Fractional Plasma, Microneedling Radio Frequency, and High Intensity Ultrasound, all aimed at achieving visible skin lifting, tightening, sculpting, and toning. I visit her quarterly and I notice such a difference in my skin after.

Hair: Paul Edmonds – A hair genius I met through Sam Smith. His work is exceptional for both cuts and colour. I also love Billi Currie for hair. Situated in Marylebone, Billi’s team is fantastic for all things hair. It’s very local for me so I always look forward to visiting the salon.

Nails: Nail Lover’s, Haverstock Hill – When I lived in West London, I relied on my
trusted manicurist, Chanel, who did amazing at home treatments that I discovered
through the beauty treatment app Prettily. Now that I’m based in North West
London, I go to a nail salon on Haverstock Hill. I discovered it with my daughter Freddie, and it’s become our go-to spot. I prefer to avoid gel or shellac as I find it to be too harsh on my nails, so I stick to a classic manicure and polish. I love having colour on my nails and often opt for a deep red or switch it up with a fun Navy or Lavender.
