What does Beauty mean to you?

As much as I’d love to say beauty is how you feel about yourself, I’m a 37 year old gay single man who can be vain as shit. But having worked with skincare brands for 7 years, I think less is more. I think each ingredient trend and tool is mostly bogus. And the cycle of it will never end in the beauty industry. Find a good moisturizer that works for you, find a SPF that doesn’t make you break out. Sleep is essential even though I’m not very good at it. And also, understand that so much of looking sexy is how you carry yourself. No makeup or skincare routine will do that.

On Skincare

I’ll confess that I’m horrible with a nighttime routine. I stick to morning because it’s the only one I can consistently do. I’m big on a face mask, because I like the experience. I start in the morning with Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Foam because I have very sensitive skin. This one doesn’t strip or irritate my skin. I then apply the Tower 28 SOS Facial Spray and Avène Soothing Eye Contour Cream. Then I put on a face mask, which I do like 5x per week. I’m currently toggling between the Sephora Collection Blueberry Mask (3-4x per week) and the viral BIODANCE Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask (1x per week). I meditate for 20 minutes while I face mask so it’s an entire experience. Then I either add Avène Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream by itself or I mix it with Augustinus Bader The Cream or The Rich Cream (depending on the season). I finish with the Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen. If I do a nighttime routine, lately I’ve been using a product my friend Aimee Song is developing. It’s a calming balm that she is developing for sensitive skin, and it feels so incredible on my skin. I’ll top that with Biossance Vitamin C Rose Oil to lock the moisture in. I apply Avène Thermal Spring Water throughout the day, which I adore and wish I could bring with me on planes.

In Jared's File

‘This cream is great for sensitive skin and has a sheer finish that adds a nice glow and evens out my skin.’

‘I found this viral mask and it is literal magic. It provides my skin a level of hydration and balance that looks like I slept 12 hours every night for a week.’

On Haircare

I try to do less is more with my hair. I have very fine hair and a deep fear that products will only make it worse. I shampoo with JVN Hair Embody Shampoo and Conditioner, which adds volume and thick appearance for my hair. I will then apply Hims Topical Minoxidil around the hairline for hair growth. Every so often I’ll add the JVN Hair Complete Pre-Wash Scalp Oil into the mix to clean the hair follicle. I don’t add any products after conditioning to my hair, largely because I really do not like the texture. And I try to wash my hair no more than 2x per week, but will condition 3-4x per week.

On Health and Wellness

I was a basic chewable multi vitamin guy until legit 2 months ago. I was at a friend’s who is a supplement fiend, and I now follow his routine exact because I’m not getting any younger. Okay here we go: LMNT Rasberry Salt electrolyte powder, Nootropics Brain Support Supplement, RidgeCrest Herbals ClearLungs, Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega + CoQ10, Amazing Herbs Premium Black Seed Oil, Metagenics PhytoMulti, NOW Cordyceps, Metagenics D3 10,000 + K, PHARMAKON Organic Aged Black Garlic, Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics Professional Formula, Nutrafol Men’s, CALM Magnesium Powder. I told you, it’s intense.

On Rituals

I’m in recovery so it’s important for me to do a morning routine that includes prayer, meditation and journaling. I also attempt to do a daily inventory at the end of each day before I retire to bed. And when a resentment pops up that won’t go away with a spot inventory, I do a more thorough inventory process to work through that. In terms of physical exercise, I do 60-minutes of elliptical 2-3x per week because I hurt my knee running. I do free weights 2-3x per week. I recently started doing yoga again. And I aspire to get back into Muay Thai, which has been my favorite workout to date. But traveling and moving put me off the routine. And I walk a lot, or try to. I’d gladly walk an hour to where I’m going when time and weather allow.

Your Beauty Secrets..

Take care of your gut. The appearance of my broken capillaries, redness is directly related to how I treat my gut. I take the garlic pills previously mentioned for that. I also try to be conscious of my caffeine intake, even though I’m obsessed with caffeine.

What is always in your handbag?

I often carry the Evian travel size spray and Innisfree SPF with me if I’m out for the day.

Jared’s Directory..

I’m a huge fan of Aesthetics by Mirelle in NYC for facials and Jeanette Black at unionderm in NYC for laser treatment (I do VBeam every year or two).
