Model and Poet Kate Parfet On The Power of Scrunchies and Self-Reflection
THE EDITHi, I’m Kate Parfet, writing to you from my cozy Highland Park house in Northeast Los Angeles. Most days I work with my partner Glori on our creative studio client work. We do a lot of brand development, creative direction and campaign production. I also model and recently wrote a book of poetry. Right now we’re experiencing June Gloom in California which means low clouds and fog during the morning that burns off midday. This time of year it’s easy for my skin to feel dry and dehydrated so I try to drink as much water as possible. I also review product ingredients and shy from unnatural dyes and perfumes since my skin is sensitive.

I’m addicted to these small velvet scrunchies from family owned Larchmont Beauty. As a child I wore monochromatic scrunchies that matched my LL Bean legging and sweater look. My adult update adds color to any day look or a good nineties slip dress for evening. My go to colors are pistachio and chocolate.
Figs Underwear Hand Mirror
My dear friend Scarlett recently launched Figs, a yummy line of body positive loungewear, intimates and tools. The hand mirror came about because she realized she wasn’t alone in her feelings and fears about not looking at herself. I completely relate and agree that looking at our bodies shouldn’t bring about shame. Taking ourselves in with love and compassion is a practice that takes time. This mirror is a great reminder.
My friend Kim, who happens to also be the best wax woman in the city, (at Wax Salon on Melrose) introduced me to this lifesaver. It’s a two-in-one solution that provides relief for ingrown hairs while brightening skin. The salicylic acid gently exfoliates clogged pores. The brightening complex evens skin tone. It also lasts forever and I’ve only had to restock once this year.
Bluestone Sun Shield
I acquired this futuristic driving hat after my first facial with Jennifer at Beverly Hills Skincare Muse. Everyone in her “secret skincare society” gets one. It filters all burning rays and comes in full or partial face coverage. In the past I’ve always been hesitant to drive around congested Los Angeles post facial. Now with this bold but effective hat, I can protect my face in it’s most sensitive condition.
Words, Kate Parfet.
